Hello everyone....

🌟 Our Week with The Gingerbread Man 🌟

Hello everyone,

We have had a very busy and exciting week in preschool, continuing to share and explore the story of ** The Gingerbread Man **. The children have become fantastic at joining in with the repeated refrains, and it has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as the week has gone on.

🥄 Monday

On Monday the children enjoyed making gingerbread men in the kitchen. We practised important skills such as using one-handed tools, rolling out dough, and using a gingerbread cutter to create our shapes. They looked very yummy, and we hope you enjoyed decorating them at home! We have loved seeing some of the photos of the decorated gingerbread men.

🥋 Tuesday

On Tuesday morning, a group of children took part in a Kickboxing session, which we all really enjoyed. We went on a monkey adventure to rescue the golden bananas! The children practised jumping with two feet together, hopscotch along the ladder, and jumping sideways.

Later, we worked in small groups to create story maps of The Gingerbread Man. The children helped retell the story while Lauren scribed their words, and then they drew pictures from different parts of the story. These are now proudly displayed in the classroom.

In the afternoon, we played a gingerbread number game on the interactive whiteboard, counting buttons and matching them to the correct numeral. We also enjoyed a visit to soft play and finished the day with action songs from Sticky Kids.

🎵 Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, a group of children visited the care home for a sing-song, story time, and cake. We had a lovely time chatting with the residents about The Gingerbread Man. Another group stayed at preschool and enjoyed drawing around each other and turning their outlines into gingerbread men.

In the afternoon, we had our Relax Kids session and went on a mountain adventure. We also used Purple Mash on the computer to colour in gingerbread men, which are now on display in the classroom.

🤸 Thursday

Thursday morning was spent at the YMCA Gym, where we had a wonderful time. After our usual warm-up routine, we played a listening game where the children moved in different ways and found an empty hoop when the music stopped. We then enjoyed the swings, trampoline, and obstacle course.

In the afternoon, a group of children cooked and decorated gingerbread men to bring home. We also visited the sensory room in small groups and continued playing the gingerbread man game on the interactive whiteboard.

🍪 Friday

On Friday morning, we had the challenge of making 30 gingerbread men for Reception to decorate next week – great teamwork! We also enjoyed drawing around each other on large paper and spending time playing outside.

In the afternoon, we discovered that a gingerbread man had escaped from the oven and left clues for us! The children went on a hunt, created “Wanted” posters, and eventually found him hiding in Mr Spracklen’s chair. It was magical to watch their excitement and hear their amazing ideas.

🌈 Learning Through Play

Throughout the week, the children have enjoyed:

  • Constructing with large rubber Lego blocks, octagons, flower construction, and pebble pictures

  • Matching the correct number of buttons to numeral gingerbread men in the number area

  • Mark making in flour and ginger using their fingers

  • Using playdough to create gingerbread men and decorate them with gems, buttons, and pom-poms

  • Retelling the story in the small world area using the puppet theatre

  • Popping bubble wrap on the finger-frenzy table

  • Bathing and caring for babies in the water tray

The children have been amazing at remembering and repeating the refrains from the story.
