Hello everyone....

Hello everyone,

Hope you have had a great weekend with family and friends. It has been lovely to welcome the children back after the weekend, full of enthusiasm and ready to learn.

This week, our focus story has been The Gingerbread Man, and the children have absolutely loved it. They have become very confident at joining in with the repeated refrains and have enjoyed retelling the story in lots of different ways throughout the week.

We started the week by making Gingerbread Man puppets, which the children used to retell the story in their own words. Later that day, the children took part in baking cakes, carefully measuring, mixing and talking about the ingredients. These cakes were then taken to the care home later in the week, giving the children a lovely opportunity to share their hard work with others.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed a kickboxing session and went on a monkey adventure, where the children practised their balance, stance and kicking skills using the pads. In the afternoon, small groups visited soft play, while others explored construction materials to build bridges for the Gingerbread Man to cross the river, encouraging teamwork, problem-solving and creativity.

Wednesday was a very special day. A group of children visited the care home to sing songs and enjoy the delicious cakes they had made, spreading lots of smiles and joy. Back at preschool, the children enjoyed junk modelling, creating boats and Gingerbread Men using a range of joining materials and techniques. In the afternoon, we welcomed Sian from Relax Kids, who led a calming relaxation session. The children went on a woodland adventure and really enjoyed taking time to relax and unwind together.

On Thursday morning, we visited the YMCA gym, where the children had great fun completing an obstacle course, using the trampoline, practising balance on the high beam and exploring tappy sticks. This session supports the children’s physical development and confidence, and we are already looking forward to next week’s visit. In the afternoon, the children used watercolours to paint their own Gingerbread Men and also enjoyed another visit to soft play.

We finished the week on a high with the Now Press Play headsets on Friday morning, acting out The Gingerbread Man. The children were fully immersed in the story, using their imagination, listening skills and movement to bring it to life.

Throughout the week, the children have enjoyed a wide range of continuous provision activities. They have been busy constructing with Mobilo, mini octagons and flower construction, developing their fine motor skills and creativity. In the number area, they matched the correct number of buttons to the numeral on the Gingerbread Man, supporting early maths skills. We explored mark making in ginger flour using fingers, and used playdough to cut out Gingerbread Men, decorating them with gems, buttons and pom poms.

In the small world area, the children have loved acting out the story using props and characters, confidently repeating the refrains. At our finger frenzy table, they practised threading Gingerbread Man outlines, developing their back-to-front and in-and-out skills. The children have also been thoroughly enjoying our hospital role-play area, using their imagination and language through play.

It has been a busy, creative and enjoyable week full of learning through play, and we are so proud of the children’s enthusiasm and engagement.
