Hello everyone....

🌟 Our Week: Books & World Book Day

Hello everyone,

We hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend.

We’ve had a very busy and exciting week in preschool as we began sharing some of our favourite stories and celebrating World Book Day. The children have enjoyed listening to and exploring the stories The Tiger Who Came to Tea, What the Ladybird Heard, A Squash and a Squeeze, and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to this week…

🐯 Monday
On Monday we shared the story The Tiger Who Came to Tea. The children really enjoyed listening to the story and talking about what happened in it. They then created their own tigers using a variety of media and creative techniques.

In the afternoon we had our own tea party. The children helped make some yummy cakes and chose the fillings for their sandwiches. They did a fantastic job spreading butter onto the bread using a knife and showed great independence.

🐞 Tuesday
On Tuesday we read What the Ladybird Heard. The children created their own ladybirds by cutting out black spots and carefully placing the same number on each side. We used lots of number language as we talked about groups, counting, and making them the same.

A group of children also had kickboxing in the hall, where we moved in lots of different animal ways. We worked together to complete a challenge where we had to move a hoop around a circle without letting go of each other’s hands.

In the afternoon we talked about what our ladybirds might be saying. The children shared lots of wonderful ideas and Julia helped to scribe their words into speech bubbles.

🎵 Wednesday
On Wednesday morning, a group of children visited the care home for a lovely sing-song, story time and cake. We played a game where we had to guess the props from some famous children’s stories. The children really enjoyed chatting with the residents and proudly telling them all about their adventures. It was a very special experience for everyone involved.

Meanwhile, the other group were busy making a surprise for Mother’s Day using clay. They also had great fun acting out the story A Squash and a Squeeze, with each child taking on the role of one of the characters from the story.

In the afternoon we took part in our Relax Kids session, enjoying some calm activities together.

📚 Thursday – World Book Day
Thursday was World Book Day, and it was wonderful to see everyone dressed as their favourite book characters.

We travelled in Julia’s van and the minibus to Dorchester Library, where the children had a tour of the library. We listened to stories, sang songs, and had the opportunity to choose some books to bring back to preschool.

In the afternoon we enjoyed some time outside, making the most of the fresh air and continuing our play together.

🐻 Friday
On Friday morning the children continued making their Mother’s Day clay surprises.

In the afternoon we shared the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. The children made their own bear masks and acted out the story together. Our adventure even led us to discover a bear hiding in the roundhouse!

🌈 Learning Through Play
Throughout the week the children have been learning through a wide range of play-based activities, including:

  • Constructing with Duplo, Zoo Waffle, foam tiles and magnetic shapes

  • Playing number games in the number area

  • Exploring playdough with cake cases, rolling pins, gems, sparkle pipe cleaners, candles, numbers and a variety of tools

  • Taking part in farm small-world play based on What the Ladybird Heard

  • Developing fine motor skills using geoboards and elastic bands to create shapes

  • Enjoying water play with teapots, cups, sieves and tea-themed resources

📚 Read Write Inc – Picture Cards
This week we continued learning our Read Write Inc. picture sounds during group time:

m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, o, c, k, u, b, f, e

We also met Fred Frog, who can only say sounds rather than full words. The children played a game using Fred Talk, listening carefully to the sounds and working out what the word was. We’ve also been enjoying lots of rhyming games and stories throughout the week.

📸 Some Pictures from Our Week

We hope you enjoy looking at the photos and seeing some of the wonderful activities the children have been involved in. It’s been a fantastic week full of stories, creativity and learning.

Looking Ahead to Next Week

Next week, we will be making some special surprises to bring home for Mother’s Day. The children will also be learning about flowers, exploring their colours, shapes and parts through a range of creative and play-based activities.

We will be sharing some lovely stories all about mums, including the book My Mum. These stories will help us talk about the special people in our lives and the things we love to do with them.

The children will have opportunities to create, explore and talk about their own families while developing their creativity, language and confidence. We are looking forward to another busy and fun week together!

🏠 Home Learning

You can support your child’s learning at home by trying some of the following activities together:

Can you tell your family the Read Write Inc. picture names we have learned so far?

Can you practise following instructions using positional language, such as:
in front, behind, to the side, forward, backwards, on top and below.

Can you play the Fred Frog game – “Fred Says…” together?

🐸 Fred Says…

Fred says:
“Put your hands on your h-e-d.”

(Ask your child to repeat the sounds.)

Your child says:
h-e-d, h-e-d, head — and touches their head.

You could try these words:

Body words:
b-a-k (back)
t-u-m (tum)
l-e-g (leg)
h-a-n-d (hand)
f-u-t (foot)
n-ee (knee)
h-i-p (hip)

Movement words:
r-u-n (run)
h-o-p (hop)
s-k-i-p (skip)
j-u-m-p (jump)
s-t-o-p (stop)

These games are a fun way to support listening, blending sounds and following instructions. 🌟
