Hello everyone.....

πŸŒΈ Our Week: Mother’s Day and Flowers 🌸

Hello everyone,

We hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend with your families celebrating Mother’s Day. We hope you enjoyed the surprise presents and cards that the children worked so hard to make for you.

We’ve had a very busy and exciting week at preschool! We enjoyed sharing the story My Mum, and the children loved talking about what makes their mums special. It was wonderful to hear their thoughtful and sometimes very funny ideas.

Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to this week…

Monday

On Monday we had a special visit from our friends from Montrose Care Home in Dorchester. They joined us for snack and enjoyed playing with the children, especially in the water area, with the playdough, and sharing stories together. The children loved chatting with them and showing them their favourite activities.

We also enjoyed making our clay pots for Mother’s Day.

In the afternoon, we used watercolours to paint flowers for our Mother’s Day cards. The children were very careful, painting within the lines and thoughtfully choosing the colours they wanted to use.

Tuesday

On Tuesday morning, a small group of children visited Poundbury Garden Centre to help celebrate their 20th birthday. We had the exciting opportunity to meet the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester, who enjoyed talking with us about our school and their roles.

We also looked at pictures of the garden centre when it was first being built and admired the enormous birthday cake. We were even lucky enough to have a slice, which was very yummy!

Back at preschool, another group of children enjoyed their kickboxing session and went on a monkey adventure.

In the afternoon, we continued working on our Mother’s Day cards. We talked about what makes our mums special and wrote these ideas on the petals of our flowers.

🎡 Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, a group of children visited the care home for a lovely sing-song, story time and cake. We also enjoyed playing catch with the residents using a beach ball. The children really enjoyed chatting with them and proudly sharing stories about their adventures. It was a very special experience for everyone involved.

Meanwhile, the other group of children stayed at preschool and painted the clay pots they had made.

In the afternoon, we took part in our Relax Kids session, enjoying calm activities together and going on an imaginative adventure around the garden.

Thursday

On Thursday we visited the YMCA gym for our weekly session. We had lots of fun!

Our warm-up game involved moving in different ways, and when the music stopped we had to climb off the ground — the children were brilliant at this.

We then split into three groups and rotated around different activities, including:

  • An obstacle course with rope swings

  • Climbing up the bench, along the wall frame and sliding down

  • Bouncing on the trampoline and practising our sit-down jumps

  • Balancing along the high and low beams

We finished the session with Tappy Sticks and the Hokey Cokey.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed time in soft play and finished off our Mother’s Day surprises.

Friday

On Friday morning the children enjoyed playing outside in the beautiful sunshine.

In the afternoon we went for a walk to Poundbury Park. We had a lovely time playing on the climbing frame, see-saw, roundabout and swings. It was a wonderful afternoon to be outdoors together.

🌈 Learning Through Play

Throughout the week the children have been learning through a wide range of play-based activities, including:

  • Constructing with Duplo, wooden gem blocks and magnetic shapes

  • Playing with Numicon boards, pieces and pegs in the number area

  • Exploring playdough with flower cutters, pom poms, lollipop sticks, gems and tools

  • Taking part in farm small-world play based on the story What the Ladybird Heard

  • Developing fine motor skills using pipe cleaners and sieves

  • Enjoying water play with fishing nets and under-the-sea creatures

πŸ“š Read Write Inc – Picture Cards

This week we continued learning our Read Write Inc. picture sounds during group time:

m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, o, c, k, u, b, f, e, l, h, r, j

We also met Fred Frog, who can only say sounds rather than full words. The children played a game using Fred Talk, listening carefully to the sounds and working out what the word was.

We’ve also been enjoying lots of rhyming games and stories throughout the week.

πŸ“Έ Some Pictures from Our Week

We hope you enjoy looking at the photos and seeing some of the wonderful activities the children have been involved in.

🌼 Looking Ahead to the Next Fortnight

Over the next two weeks, we will be sharing lots of spring and Easter stories and enjoying many exciting activities together.

The children will be going on some lovely adventures, including a trip to the farm, where they will be able to see some animals up close. We will also be taking part in a variety of spring and Easter crafts, cooking activities, swimming and Easter egg hunts.

Alongside this, the children will continue to enjoy their regular activities such as gym, relax kids and kickboxing, outdoor play, and lots of fun learning experiences with their friends.

We are looking forward to a very busy and exciting fortnight filled with exploring, creating, and celebrating the signs of spring! 🌷🐣

🏠 Home Learning

You can support your child’s learning at home by trying some of the following fun activities together:

🐸 Fred Frog Game – “Fred Talk”
Fred Frog can only say sounds, not whole words! Say a word using the sounds and see if your child can work out the word. For example:

  • c-a-t (cat)

  • d-o-g (dog)

  • m-u-m (mum)

  • s-u-n (sun)

Can your child blend the sounds together to say the word? You can also take turns being Fred Frog!

πŸ“š Story Time
Share a favourite story together. Talk about the characters and what happens in the story.
You could ask questions such as:

  • What was your favourite part?

  • Who was your favourite character?

  • What do you think might happen next?

🌸 Signs of Spring
While out on a walk or in the garden, see if you can spot signs of spring.
Look for flowers, buds on trees, birds, insects or blossom.
Can your child talk about what they notice?

🎨 Creative Fun
Try drawing or painting some spring pictures together. You could paint flowers, butterflies or baby animals.

πŸ”’ Counting Practice
Practise counting objects around the house or garden such as toys, steps, or flowers.
Can your child count up to 10 or even higher?

πŸ‘ Fine Motor Fun
Help strengthen little hands by:

  • Playing with playdough

  • Threading pasta or beads onto string

  • Using pegs to clip onto a box or piece of card

These simple activities help build important skills while having fun together. 😊
