Hello everyone....

πŸ‚ Preschool Blog – Oliver’s Vegetables 🍎πŸ₯•

Hello everyone,

We hope you have all had a lovely weekend enjoying the beautiful autumn weather with family and friends!

Last week, we continued our learning all about fruit, vegetables, harvest and farming, inspired by the story Oliver’s Vegetables. We have had a wonderful week full of hands-on experiences, exploring different foods, learning new vocabulary and developing our understanding of where our food comes from.

πŸ₯• What have we been up to this week?

Monday 🍎

On Monday morning, we visited the school allotments to discover all the different types of fruit and vegetables growing there. We took our checklists with us and marked off the items we spotted. In the afternoon, we got creative with some vegetable printing, exploring the different shapes and patterns vegetables can make.

Tuesday πŸ₯”

On Tuesday morning, we enjoyed PE in the hall, tackling an exciting obstacle course! The children practised balancing, stepping across stepping stones and crawling, developing their coordination and physical skills.

In the afternoon, we learnt all about potatoes. We discovered how potatoes grow underground and explored a potato sack, finding potatoes of all different shapes and sizes. We gave them a good wash before investigating and tasting different types of potato, including chips, mashed potato, crisps and boiled potatoes. This was a fantastic opportunity to explore different textures, tastes and ways of preparing food!

Wednesday πŸ›’

On Wednesday morning, one group of children visited the care home to enjoy a lovely sing-song, share a story and eat cake with the residents. The other group went on a shopping trip to Tesco with a shopping list. Each child chose an item to bring back to preschool for us to explore and taste. We also enjoyed vegetable soup for snack!

In the afternoon, we had our Relax Kids session with Sian. The children had a lovely time playing games, stretching, taking part in peer massage and practising relaxation techniques. It was a wonderful opportunity to focus on our wellbeing and enjoy some calm time together.

Thursday 🎨

On Thursday morning, the children chose their favourite vegetable and had a go at describing it. We talked about its colour, shape, size and appearance before drawing our own pictures.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed playing outside and got busy making jelly ready for our Autumn Fest celebrations. We explored the different textures and had lots of fun getting involved!

Friday ☕

On Friday morning, we added our photographs and artwork to our Magical Achievements Books, celebrating the wonderful things we have been doing and learning.

In the afternoon, we enjoyed some lovely child-led play before finishing the week with a cosy hot chocolate for snack. What a lovely way to end a busy week!

🏑 Learning through play

Throughout the week, the children have been busy exploring our exciting continuous provision, building on their real-life experiences and developing their skills through play.

  • πŸ—£️ Vocabulary Tray: We have enjoyed exploring real objects linked to our learning, helping us to understand and use new words.

  • 🌱 Small World: The allotment scene has inspired the children to create their own stories and explore where fruit and vegetables grow.

  • 🏠 Home Corner: The children have been using their real-life experiences to act out familiar situations, recreating activities they have enjoyed at home, in the shops and at preschool.

  • πŸŒ€ Finger Frenzy: The spinners have provided opportunities to develop our fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

  • 🧱 Construction: We have been busy building with Duplo, magnetic shapes and waffle blocks, developing our creativity, problem-solving and construction skills.

  • πŸ”’ Maths Area: We have been sorting fruit by colour and counting how many we have, developing our early mathematical understanding.

  • πŸ”¦ Light and Shadows: The children have been exploring torches and shining light through different materials, discovering how shadows are made and change.

  • πŸ₯£ Playdough: With farm animals, lolly sticks and rolling pins, the children have been creating, modelling and developing their imagination and fine motor skills.

πŸ“š Vocabulary for learning

The children have brought home a vocabulary sheet containing some of the key words we are exploring over the next two weeks. During group time, we have also enjoyed playing ‘What’s in the Bag?’, investigating different vegetables and using our senses to describe what we find.

We have been learning the difference between fruit and vegetables and discovering which vegetables grow underground and which grow above the ground. Talking about these words at home will help the children to become familiar with them and use them in their everyday conversations.

🍎 Looking Ahead to Next Week

Next week, we will be continuing our learning about fruit and sharing the story Oliver’s Fruit Salad. πŸ“πŸŒπŸŠ

We will be exploring a variety of fruits, learning their names, describing their colours, shapes and textures, and discovering where our food comes from.

The children will have opportunities to get involved in some yummy cooking activities using eggs and apples, developing their understanding of ingredients and recipes. At snack time, we will be exploring and tasting a variety of foods, talking about where they come from and how they are made or grown.

Alongside this, we will enjoy lots of exciting activities to support our learning, including developing our vocabulary, early maths skills, creativity and understanding of the world through play.

We also have a couple of trips this week. Please see your emails for details. Any questions please come and speak to Julia.

We are looking forward to another week full of exciting discoveries, delicious tastes and fun learning experiences! πŸπŸ‘©‍🍳

🏑 Home learning

Here are a few ideas to try at home:

πŸ₯• Explore your food: Can your child name the fruit and vegetables you have at home? Which ones grow underground, and which grow above the ground?

🍎 Try something new: Could your child help to prepare a snack or meal using fruit or vegetables? Talk about the ingredients and describe their colours, shapes, textures and tastes.

πŸ›’ Shopping helpers: When out shopping, can your child help you find a fruit or vegetable on your shopping list?

πŸ”’ Count and sort: Can you sort fruit and vegetables by colour, size or type? How many do you have altogether?
