Hello everyone....

Our Week at Preschool – Fireworks, Colour, Remembrance Day & Children in Need

Hello everyone,

We hope you all had a lovely weekend with family and friends — and enjoyed the dry weather!

This week has been full of excitement, curiosity and hands-on learning. Our theme has taken us through fireworks, autumn colours, Remembrance Day, and Children in Need. The children have been incredible explorers, creators and thinkers throughout.

Group Time

We enjoyed singing lots of our favourite songs and sharing the story There’s a Bear on My Chair, which sparked wonderful conversations about rhyming words.

On Tuesday, we watched two child-friendly Remembrance Day videos from CBeebies and talked about their meaning.

We also spent time with Reggie the Resilient Tortoise, focusing on what it means to keep trying. We shared things we can’t do yet and talked about how we will keep practising — lots of brilliant ideas from the children!

Monday – Thorncombe Woods Adventure

In the morning, we visited Thorncombe Woods in our all-in-one suits and wellies. The children loved exploring the autumn environment, finding chestnuts, acorns, sticks, bark and leaves. Running up and down the hills was definitely a highlight!

In the afternoon, we recalled our adventure and drew pictures of our trip. We also carried out an exciting science experiment using Coca-Cola and Mentos — watching it explode like a firework!

Tuesday – Kickboxing, Poppies & Fireworks

We had our first Kickboxing session on Tuesday morning. The children learnt how to bow and sign “ma’am” and “sir,” run on the spot, jump over an imaginary log, crouch and freeze. They were brilliant at lining up and learning the Stance and Guard positions.

We also learnt about Remembrance Day and made poppy biscuits to take home.

In the afternoon, we used a range of paint techniques and tools to create colourful firework pictures.

Wednesday – Care Home Visit, PE & Chocolate Sparklers

On Wednesday morning, one group of children visited the local care home for songs, a story and cakes — a lovely intergenerational moment.

Another group had PE, creating an obstacle course using climbing, balancing and jumping. We also made chocolate breadstick sparklers and learnt how chocolate melts. We hope you enjoyed them!

In the afternoon, we had Relax Kids with Sian, including the ever-popular Beans Game.

Thursday – Rocket Names & Firework Science

In the morning, we made our own firework rocket name pictures. This involved recognising our names, naming 2D shapes (rectangles and triangles), and practising fine motor skills by peeling and sticking star stickers.

We also played turn-taking board games in small groups.

In the afternoon, we carried out a firework experiment using oil, water and food colouring. Can your child tell you what happened?

Friday – Children in Need

We talked all about Children in Need, how it helps children across the country, and why it is an important event.

The children made Numicon biscuits with Smarties and went on a Pudsey Bear hunt around preschool — finding 11 bears and doing some wonderful counting!

Play & Learning Throughout the Week 🍁

Alongside our planned activities, the children have continued to explore and learn through play:

Autumn Vocabulary Tray

We explored autumn objects — naming, signing, and describing them using our senses. Lots of great observation work!

Imaginative Play

The farm small world, home corner and our bonfire night role-play area have all been very popular. Children loved roasting pretend marshmallows, wrapping up in cosy scarves, and acting out their own bonfire stories.

Fine Motor Fun

At the Finger Frenzy table, children used scissors to cut up autumn leaves — great for building strength and control. They also loved experimenting with spinners and worked hard to get them turning!

Construction Area

Builders were busy all week using blocks, Toolo, transparent shapes and K’Nex to create a variety of imaginative structures.

Number Play

Using egg boxes and muffin tins, children counted and sorted conkers — a brilliant way to develop early maths skills.

Playdough Creations

We explored orange playdough with lolly sticks, pom poms and glittery pipe cleaners, promoting fine motor development and creativity.

Next Week at Preschool 🎆

Next week, we will be exploring owls and hedgehogs. We’ll be sharing the story Owl Babies along with some lovely hedgehog stories. The children have plenty of exciting and inspiring learning adventures ahead — we can’t wait to get started!

Home Learning 🏡

Here are some simple, fun activities you can try at home this week:

  • Try a new food – Can your child taste something they haven’t tried before?

  • Share a rhyming story – Enjoy reading together and spotting words that sound the same.

  • Balance challenge – Can your child stand on one leg? How long can they hold it?
